I've recently started using the WebBrowser control and noticed that the REXX debugger for Internet Explorer will display the value of a variable in the browser window in REXX code. I've also noticed that it's impossible to use an in-line debugger. As soon as the browser window loads the debugging environment, it stops responding to keyboard input and displays the wrong values for variables, even when you stop the debugger. Does anyone know why REXX's in-line debugger has such severe problems? I don't understand why it hasn't been fixed, or even why it's still being developed. Is there a workaround? What's the best alternative to the Internet Explorer debugger? A: REXX is a poor language to debug, especially in IE since the debugging controls are all located on the object, not on the page. The REXX debugging environment is very minimal, and it does not understand any of the controls or events. All of that is true for other languages that have in-line debuggers (javac, c, c++, etc) I use the Java in-line debugger at work, and I find it much more useful. That is Java 5.0 or later, it is the most minimal, and it will allow you to see any variables and methods and can usually stop at break points and inspect the code. It is possible to put REXX variables and objects directly into the debugging controls (Java), but you still don't have any way of getting into the code to inspect those variables. FWIW, some of the REXX implementation has come a long way. I recently ported a good deal of the REXX debugger and other compiler features to some other language I am working on. It should be reasonably straight forward. You could also look at the VB implementation of the debugger. However, given the minimal nature of the REXX debugger, I don't think it will work for you. Edit: You will be able to do better. (Disclaimer, I wrote that main part of the Java debugger.) To run your debugger, you will need: An interpreter/runtime. I am not familiar with Java's classpath.
